ISC3 – International Sustainable Chemistry Collaborative Centre

Education

Sustainable chemistry needs to be able to rely on the sound knowledge of executives, researchers and practitioners. The ISC3-Research & Education Hub screens, assesses, develops and implements international study programs of sustainable chemistry. For a proper understanding of sustainable chemistry, knowhow about green chemistry, i.e. synthesis and product related topics, needs to be complemented by a broad expertise on circular economy and product life cycle, recycling, feedstock, new business and service models, regulations, international chemicals management, environmental chemistry, toxicology and economics.

With the establishment of the International School for Sustainable Chemistry, the ISC3 aims at making sustainable chemistry an integral part of scientific and executive education. The ISC3-Research Hub offers scientific courses and trainings on a global level and helps interested third parties, such as universities or authorities especially from developing countries, to establish similar programs in their institutions. Furthermore, the ISC3-Research & Education Hub holds the Summer School on Sustainable Chemistry each year, which addresses not only academia but also aims to interlink young academics with professionals from authorities, industry, and non-governmental organizations. The summer school is complementary to the annual scientific Conference on Green and Sustainable Chemistry.

By providing a systems thinking perspective for the practice of chemistry the M.Sc. Sustainable Chemistry addresses multiple aspects of sustainable development such as global resource and product flows, the interface of chemistry, renewable energies and climate change, international policies for chemicals management and pollution prevention, alternative business models for chemical products and tools for assessing sustainability. Extending much beyond the lens of green chemistry, it provides essential expertise for the chemical profession to operate in alignment with the Agenda 2030 in various sectors and thus facilitates action towards achieving multiple SDGs.

The MBA Sustainable Chemistry Management provides comprehensive training for sustainability-oriented management in various sectors connected to the chemical enterprise. The curriculum teaches how to integrate transformative management practices of sustainable chemistry in your field of profession in order to reshape our socio-economy to the requirements of sustainability. The curriculum includes concepts and approaches of green chemistry and sustainable chemistry, principles and conditions for sustainability management, sustainability assessment, ethics and leadership, innovation management, international policy frameworks for chemicals and waste management, regulations for chemical safety in products and supply chains, strategies for implementing product and resource circularity, strategic planning for climate neutrality.

Master Sustainable Chemistry at Leuphana Professional School Listed among SDG Good Practices of the UN

The programme M.Sc. Sustainable Chemistry, which is offered at the Leuphana Professional School in Lueneburg, Germany, is now listed in the SDG Good Practices of the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UN DESA) for actively contributing to the SDGs 4, 9, 12 and 17.

Successful submissions represent good practices, success stories and lessons learned by all stakeholders in the implementation of the 2030 Agenda and the SDGs. The results are made available in an online database of more than 500 good practices that could be replicated or scaled-up by others across the globe to address existing gaps and constraints in the implementation of the SDGs.

The ISC3 Research & Education Hub has developed a first of its kind Master of Science in Sustainable Chemistry (M.Sc. SC) for international professionals.

Launched in March 2020 at Leuphana University Professional School, the interdisciplinary program provides expert interdisciplinary training and teaches a broad understanding of sustainable chemistry along the life cycle of chemical products, services, and functions – from the molecular level to global resource and product flows.

The programme is aimed at highly motivated professionals with a degree (B.Sc. or M.Sc.) in chemistry, chemical, bio, and environmental engineering, pharmacy, biochemistry or related fields and at least one year of relevant work experience who wish to integrate expertise in sustainability into their professional portfolio.

The M.Sc. in Sustainable Chemistry is designed as a blended learning program, combining e-learning with clustered classroom sessions including lectures, seminars, group work, and laboratory exercises. This way, professionals may complete the program from wherever they are based, while still having the chance to meet their peers on-site at Leuphana University. The M.Sc. Sustainable Chemistry at Leuphana Professional School is an important milestone for the integration of sustainable chemistry into the higher education of researchers, executives, and practitioners.

The ISC3 Research & Education Hub is launching an MBA Sustainable Chemistry Management in March 2022

This programme combines sustainability management with sustainable chemistry. It is designed for professionals from all academic backgrounds who wish to integrate this expertise into management and decision-making processes.

The content provided is relevant to all sectors connected to the chemical enterprise for shaping socio-economic practices in line with sustainable development.

Similar to the M.Sc. Sustainable Chemistry, the MBA programme is predominantly taught online, with selected on-site sessions at Leuphana University and broad opportunities for networking with stakeholders of sustainable chemistry.

Summer School on Sustainable Chemistry for Sustainable Development

The Summer School is an annual event - one week in September - jointly organized by the ISC3 Research and Education Hub and the Leuphana University in Lüneburg. During the program participants learn about the latest developments around the concepts of sustainable chemistry including chemicals management. The summer school has been held since 2015.

Target audience of the Summer School are postgraduates, PhD-students as well as young professionals from industry, public authorities, research and non-governmental organizations professionally interested in the topic of sustainable chemistry as a cross-cutting issue. The international trainers’ team consists of scientists and practitioners actively operating in sustainable chemistry-related fields or international co-operations.

The program comprises lectures, practical exercises, case studies, group discussions, a field trip and a laboratory tour to exemplify important aspects of sustainable chemistry. At the end of the Summer School the participants will receive a certificate.

The focus changes every year according to the ongoing discussion on sustainable chemistry. Topics dealt with so far are: “Renewable Energy” (2019), “Sustainable Building and Living” (2018), "Sustainable Chemistry and e-Waste" (2017), "Sustainable Textiles" (2016) and "Sustainable Chemistry in International Cooperation" (2015).
